Some Signs and Symptoms of Depression
Signs of Depression Warranting Attention Depression is a normal response to difficult emotional events, so is not necessarily a matter of concern, beyond compassion for the sufferer. However, depression that doesn't lift, or worsens, can be dangerous. It's helpful to know the signs of depression, and then to think of each of them as being on a continuum. Having more symptoms, and more severe degrees of several symptoms, is a sign that the person needs help. Taking the risk to speak, rather than the risk of losing the person to drugs, alcohol, other addictions - or suicide - is courageous. No one can keep another person perfectly safe; no one can make someone else get help; but intervening with some basic information is an action caring people can take which often produces positive results. Signs and Symptoms: Pervasive hopelessness, loss of motivation/drive Withdrawal from family and/or friends Grades or work performance dropping Recreational or prescription drug use/abuse Increased and/or excessive drinking. Diminished self care, especially of nutrition and chronic illness conditions Recovery from deep depression; return of energy Talk of or references to suicide, especially when other symptoms are present Previous suicide gesture or attempt Family member who has committed suicide Tragedy; severe ongoing abuse or neglect (past or present) This list is not meant to be exhaustive - there are many signs and many variations. If you're the one facing difficult times, and feel depressed, get help sooner rather than later. If you know someone who may be depressed, consider talking with him or her about this list, and about your concerns.
