So You Want to Work From Home!

How to Decide If a Home-based Internet Business is for You

Working from home in any field requires a certain personality, but working from home on the Internet requires a certain set of traits and assets that not everyone possesses. I’ve condensed these into the 6 that seem most important as I look back on my own experiences with Internet businesses, and those of my many web and face-to-face friends.

1) Persistence
Choosing which type of Internet business to create; getting it started; waiting (in most cases) for the results; and then choosing again due to disappointing results, requires real persistence. It’s important to be prepared to make several attempts before finding the type of business that clicks with your needs and personality.

2) Self-discipline
Self-discipline is required to resist all the offers – your email inbox will be filled with “the one-and-only-best-business-opportunity.” Wait, wait, wait! Do lots of research, call or email people in the businesses you’re considering joining, and get as many details as you can. Write everything in a journal (good for tracking your expenses for tax purposes, too) so you keep the details straight and begin to filter out the types of business you DON’T want to have. Do you mind stocking inventory? Do you want drop-ship only? Are you going to be an affiliate for one or many businesses? Do you have time to go to meetings – online or in person? Do you even know what some of those terms mean?

If you don't know the answers, it's not necessarily a problem, but does indicate to you what your learning curve will be – a very good thing to know!

3) Financing
Yes, you will need some money to start even a web-based home business. The amount varies from a few dollars to hundreds or thousands – so know what you’re getting into before you commit . There are several types of costs, depending on the business you’ve chosen: up front joining costs; required purchases; advertising; business cards; home office organization; living expenses if you don’t have a “day-job,” and so on.

4) Time
It’s important to talk with your family about the time you will need, including the time of day you’re planning to work on your home business. If you’re on your own, it’s still important to consider the time it will take, and make sure you can make yourself available. Many companies present a “rule of thumb” that 10 hours per week is enough to establish and run a high paying web based business. While there are some people, and some companies, who make this happen right from the start, for most people it takes more than 10 hours. Often a lot more! Again, the solution is to ask lots of questions and consider carefully the answers you get. If it doesn’t sound realistic for you, it probably isn’t.

5) Family Support
Most businesses take up to 5 years to be fully in the black, and fully supporting you – if you’ve been realistic, had the capital you needed, and didn’t run into any surprises. The Internet does offer many opportunities that say within 3 years you’ll have a 6-figure salary – and it does happen. Assess yourself carefully, though, because it takes an enormous amount of self-discipline, knowledge, and family support to work that diligently. It also requires family support to be sure you have the income (capital) you need to carry you until your Internet business is making a steady income and you’re comfortable it’s going to stay that way.

6) Organizational Skills
Organizational skills are important because you must keep all the possibilities you’ll be presented with, straight. Having a work space and system that makes the best use of your time is vital. You will also need to keep detailed records for tax purposes - including those which will back up your home-office deductions. Software exists to help you with much of this, and most online businesses include a “back office” that organizes a lot of data for you. Yet there seems to be a never-ending list of tasks the business owner still must accomplish!

Your success in Internet business requires more than these 6 things, of course, and other people might compile a different list - but these are the most common topics of discussion among the Internet entrepreneurs and mentors I've spoken with. Consider them carefully, choose your business wisely, and go ahead with enthusiasm!
