My Four Best Puppy Training Tips
Most people get a puppy because they want the companionship a loving, responsive dog can offer. If the puppy is helped to learn good habits from the start, you won’t have to spend time undoing bad habits or putting up with an adult dog no one else likes. My four best tips are these: 1 )No body part goes in the puppy’s mouth. I know, dogs love to chew your fingers and mouth your hands or arms, but don’t allow it. You’re setting your dog up for failure later on, when she accidentally bites someone with her now larger teeth and stronger jaws. Have plenty of dog bones and toys on hand so whenever your dog goes after your fingers, you have a toy to offer instead! 2) Teach your dog to sit before he gets petted. Even small dogs should not be allowed to jump up on people to get attention. Plus it’s very endearing to have a dog walk up to you, sit down, and wait to be petted – especially if you‘ve also taught her to lift her paw to shake hands! 3) This next tip is a bit more difficult to manage, but virtually guarantees a well-behaved pet. When you’re home with your dog, keep him on his lead, with the lead strap attached to your belt or around your wrist. Yes, it’s awkward at first, and yes, you must be careful, but you’ll accomplish several good things with this method: your dog will learn to read your body language quickly; you will learn a lot about your dog, and will be minimizing the chance that he’ll make a mistake; and the effort you make to do this will develop a good relationship between you and your dog. 4) Crate train your puppy. Some people think this is cruel, but it’s not. Most puppies adjust quite well and easily, and there are many advantages. You will always know your dog can be kept safe in an emergency, when visiting, or when traveling. If you ever have to leave your dog at the groomer’s, the vet’s, or a kennel, if he’s already crate trained he will be much happier and less stressed in those unusual circumstances. There are many other things to consider when training your dog but these have been staples for me for over 25 years, and 5 dogs (we always had the fun of two at once!). Happy training!
