Feel Better About Feeling Good

Off the Rocks

Some of you may have read my article “On the Rocks” which talked about what happens when life feels out of control and what we can do about it.

Now I have the opposite idea to present to you: what happens to us when our lives are going well, are “off the rocks”? How can we best handle these periods when they come?

I know that for me, the temptation is twofold: pretend I have something to do with it (take credit for a decision I made, for example, that turned out well); and forget God.

Well, I don’t really forget Him. But it is true that when things in my life are going well, I tend to rely on Him less consciously. Have you ever had that experience? Many people seem to know about this one, and we all struggle with what to do about it.

“What to do” is really quite clear: re-turn to Him. Return to Him. Turn to Him again. And again. Sometimes we’re able to turn to Him in gratitude, even when it’s not Sunday morning or personal prayer time. Sometimes we remember to praise Him in thanksgiving, giving Him the Glory for all that is good – (and not so good, but today we’re talking about being off the rocks!) – in our lives. Actually it’s easy and fun to sing praise hymns and offer prayers of Thanksgiving. A relief from going to Him with trials and tribulations.

How deep is it, though? Hymns and prayers of thanksgiving are necessary, and they can become a distraction. Do I ever sit quietly, in the midst of the good times, and say “Yes, Lord. All that I have and all that I’m feeling is Yours. Thank you for this wonderful experience; and I’m ready for whatever you have planned for me.”

Can you say yes, to even sometimes offering yourself to God yet again, in the midst of a good time? Knowing it may change, if you offer it to God. Not that He wants you to have bad times – He wants you to have the times that will bring you closer to Him, and if we always remember that, hard times are easier to manage. And good times demand more of us than enjoyment. They demand responsibility. To paraphrase, if you’ve been given a lot, a lot is being asked of you! We’re responsible for what we know, and for using wisely what we’ve been given.

So we manage the good times – the “life off the rocks” times --the same way we manage the bad times: we cling to the Rock that offers us “the peace that passes all understanding;” the Christ who is ever within and about us.
