Choosing a French Door Refrigerator

Recently I needed to buy a new refrigerator, and I had to do it quickly! I chose a French Door style because I liked the look - but learned about what to consider in the process.

SPACE
I needed the French Door style because the kitchen involved is narrow - so the size of the doors was very important. Depth was also important, and French Door refrigerators are often less deep than other styles, for equivalent volume.

FREEZER LOCATION
Be sure to consider which freezer placement is most convenient for you - largely a matter of personal preference - because there is no choice with this style. I'm a "freezer on the bottom" fan, so there was no problem. If you prefer the freezer on the top, you don't have the French Door option.

INTERIOR LAYOUT
I love being able to have everything in its own spot, and close to hand. The French Door style has given me more convenience any other refrigerator I've ever had! The doors compartments are deep enough for big jugs, and most brands included sliders in the compartments to keep the contents of partially filled shelves neatly in place. The fronts of the shelves were tall enough to keep bottles and jars from tipping over when the door is open.

The interior shelves are spacious, generally adjustable, and easy to keep clean. In many models, across the bottom of the refrigerator area is a side-to-side "extra cold" compartment. This is very convenient and helpful, and also is the only reason both doors would have to be open at once.

THE FREEZER
In most models I explored, the freezer was deep, wide, and "drawer style" - the bottom door pulls out, like a dresser drawer. All the contents of the freezer are easy to see and reach.

FINISH
French Door refrigerators are available in all the common finishes. I chose stainless steel because of the other appliances I was working with. Cleaning stainless steel is easier than it used to be, and offers a high-end look as well.

COST
There are two elements here - the cost to run the refrigerator, and the cost to buy it.
TO BUY - this style of refrigerator was a little more expensive than comparable single door models. I decided it was worth the extra $200-500 it because it was the only style that met all my needs.
The model I chose (an LG) was about $200 more than if I'd bought a comparable single door model from the same company. (And I couldn't wait for special sales, which you might be able to do if you're not in immediate need.)

TO RUN - I was happy to discover that Energy Star ratings were comparable or better for the French Door Style refrigerators I looked at.

NEGATIVES
Only one, and it's only a partial negative - it involves that "extra cold" compartment that runs the full width of the refrigerator. I would have preferred two compartments, so the great advantages could be had while still only needing to open one door at a time. This is a minor complaint, however, compared to all the advantages.

RESULT
I've had my French Door refrigerator for 3 months now - and still love it! Considering space, layout, freezer location, interior convenience, and cost ahead of time really paid off - not only is it beautiful to look at, it's as functional as I needed it to be!
