8 Handy Home Decorating Tips

Sometimes it feels daunting to think about decorating a house - especially if you need to do it quickly and make it feel "like a home!" These handy tips will help and can be used in any room.

1) Think about what you already have - which pieces have multiple uses, allowing you design flexibility? Which do you need to part with, and what do you love? Take action - sort, dispose (give away, garage sale, or garbage?), and place what you love. The most flexible pieces are good for filling in around necessities and anchoring the "what you love" category.

2) It's OK if the wood tones in your furniture don't match - a room is more interesting and feels more comfortable if there is a variety of wood tones throughout.

3) It's great to mix styles - the contrast between modern and antiques can make a room look like a designer room, yet still personal and cozy. The contrast also helps show off each piece.

4) Think in terms of vignettes - each part of the room has a story to tell. You can do this by using what you love as a focal point. Your favorite side table next to the rocker from Aunt Hattie can make a charming pair; add a small pillow to the rocker and a vase of flowers and a lamp to the table, and you're done with that part of the room!

5) Remember "floor level" - a collection of baskets, a door stop (could be a rock you brought home from last year's vacation), a basket of pine cones, a stack of books - can all be used to fill in odd empty places or the spaces under side tables, to complete the look of the vignette. These items can also soften the transition from one part of the room to another.

6) Simple is a great solution! Think about how your family lives, and place furniture that will be useful to them where they need it. Your child who likes to study in his room needs a desk or table to work on; the child who likes to study at the kitchen table might prefer to have a comfortable chair in her room.

7) Play with color! This includes silver and gold colored items - it's OK to mix them! A few candlesticks with an appropriately sized plant near by is lovely on a mantel. An old clock with a collection of vases or small pitchers looks friendly and inviting. Walls can be neutral (especially if you might move again soon), but painting one wall an accent color can bring in a bold color without giving you too much work if you need to neutralize it later!

8) Keep in mind that large collections show best when grouped together and confined - by a table top, a cabinet, a shelf, or a bookcase.
For other things, groupings of 3 or 5 items seem to feel best in a room. They don't have to be 3 or 5 of the same type of thing - an arrangement with a small wood box, a pretty vase, and a couple of old books, stacked, can be beautiful on a side table - or on the dining room table! Do consider how well the texture, color, and age of the items play off each other.

Most important is to have fun with what you already own. I've moved a lot, and after one move my younger (but adult)son came to visit having not seen the house at all yet. He walked in the front door, looked around the first 2 rooms of the open floor plan, turned to me with a grin of relief and said, "Mom, you always make it feel like home! I was afraid it wouldn't, but it does!"

That was all I needed to hear - I have always followed the tips above, so although furnishings have been added and subtracted over the years, the feel was the same - the result felt like a home even though we had just been there a week.

The internet is a great place to shop for home decorating ideas - you can find a lot for a few dollars, or you can spend a fortune - enjoy making your house a home!
